Question 1

What is the difference between shot peening and shot blasting?

Accepted Answer

Shot blasting and sand blasting remove material such as scale, rust or old coatings and create a surface profile. Shot peening is a cold-working process that uses controlled media impacts to induce a layer of compressive residual stress, which slows crack initiation and extends fatigue life. Peening is verified by Almen intensity and coverage, not by visual cleanliness.

Question 2

Which specifications can KOSHIN shot peening machines be configured for?

Accepted Answer

KOSHIN systems are configured around the customer's governing specification, typically aerospace standards such as AMS 2430 or AMS 2432 for computer-monitored peening, with Almen intensity verified per SAE J442 and J443 and media controlled to the applicable media specification. Monitoring and data records are designed to support Nadcap-audited processes.

Question 3

Can KOSHIN run trials on our parts before we purchase a machine?

Accepted Answer

Yes. KOSHIN operates in-house machines for experiment services, including Almen saturation curves, coverage studies and process development on customer samples. Validated parameters are then transferred into the production machine recipe, and contract processing is available for production batches.

Question 4

What information is needed to prepare a machine proposal?

Accepted Answer

Provide workpiece dimensions and material, peening area, intensity and coverage requirements, media type and size, required production rate, available floor space and height, and any HS&E, Nadcap, emissions, noise or energy-efficiency requirements.

Question 5

Does KOSHIN support overseas installation and after-sales service?

Accepted Answer

KOSHIN supports customers in more than 50 countries and regions with installation, commissioning, operator training, spare parts and lifecycle upgrades, coordinated from its Singapore engineering center.
